Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why do newborns and infants get adjustments?
A. One of the most stressful events that we all go through in life is being born. Because problems during labor and the trip through the birth canal can be quite traumatic, newborns are particularly susceptible to becoming subluxated at birth. A newborn may exhibit signs of spinal distress with colic, unusual crying, problems feeding, latching on, or difficulty sleeping. A subluxation may not be immediately obvious, but to ensure that children get the right start in life, they should be checked by a chiropractor as a normal part of postnatal care.
Q. When should you first take your child to the chiropractor?
A. As soon as possible after birth to ensure proper nervous system functioning and facilitate optimum growth and development.
Q. Why do children need periodic chiropractic check-ups as they grow?
A. As children develop, they suffer falls and tumbles while learning to crawl, walk, climb, and run. Older children experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. These injuries may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort.
It is generally a well-accepted fact that children should have regular dental check-ups to identify problems at the earliest possible time because the earlier the problem is detected, the easier it will be to fix. Likewise, children should regularly be evaluated by a chiropractor to identify and correct spinal problems that could progress into more.
As the saying goes, “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree”. Having your child checked for posture changes, muscle imbalances, and spinal issues can ensure that early insults to the spine never become an issue in their health and development. Children generally respond quickly and may require less frequent check-ups to keep them healthy.
Q. Are adjustments safe for children?
A. Yes! The doctors at Ramsey Chiropractic Center modify the force and style of the adjustment to fit the size of each individual patient. With small children, adjustments can often be performed while the child is relaxing comfortably in the parent’s arm. Some adjustments may be done using only the light touch of the doctor’s pinky finger.
Q. What common conditions of infants and children might respond to chiropractic care?
A. Parents take their children to the chiropractor for subluxation removal for help with bed-wetting, clumsiness, colic, constipation, recurring ear infections, sleep disturbances, and growing pains. Subluxations cause headaches, painful joints, poor concentration, postural problems, scoliosis, and sinus problems. Children generally love to be adjusted and often jump up on the chiropractic table when they arrive for their appointment!
